Tamil Nadu reports highest single-day spike in fresh Covid infections, recoveries

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu reported a highest-ever single-day spike in Covid-19 cases with 4549 people testing positive for the infection on Thursday while also reporting the highest ever single day recoveries on the same day with 5,106 patients being discharged.

The state bulletin confirmed that the total tally of positive cases touched 156, 369 while the number of recoveries stood at 107, 416.

However, the number of deaths reported on Wednesday was at 69, which is the highest in the State and resulted in the death toll rising to 2236.


On Thursday, of the cases, 1157 were from Chennai. The State capital now has 82,128 cases.

However, Chennai has managed to keep the number of cases relatively stable since last week. This is believed to be owing to the complete lockdown that was imposed in the State. However, other districts in the State have witnessed a surge in cases.

Thiruvallur reported 526 cases on Thursday while Madurai, Thiruvanamalai and Vellore had over 200 cases reported.

Chennai and neighbouring districts like Chengelpet, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram were under an intense lockdown from June 19. This lockdown had been extended till July 5 after which restrictions were eased, much like what was done during the Unlock 1.0 period. However, the general state-wide lockdown is on till July 31.

The State has 107 testing facilities of which 54 are government-run. Tamil Nadu has been focused on aggressive testing and has tested over 17 lakh samples, the bulletin said. Of these, 41,382 samples were tested on Wednesday alone.
