The total tally of cases in the State has touched 5409 cases and with two more deaths being reported, the death toll has risen to 37, a government media bulletin confirmed.
Among the deaths, one was a 56-year-old woman who had comorbidities from Thiruvallur who passed away at Kilpauk MCH in Chennai yesterday. Another was a 48-year-old woman with comorbidities from Chennai passed away today at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH).
Chennai accounted for 316 of the 580 cases and touched a whopping 2644 cases on Thursday. The second-highest number of cases were reported from Thiruvallur which recorded 63 people contracting the virus.
Chennai has 2281 active cases and 23 deaths have also been reported so far in the district.
A large number of these cases have been linked to the Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai which was open during the lockdown.
So far, 273 children below the age of 12 have also tested positive in the state.
The government said 31 patients were discharged on Thursday, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,547.
So far, 2,02,436 samples and 1,92, 574 people have been tested. As many as 14,195 samples were tested on Thursday alone, the highest so far.
