CHENNAI: Chennai: Tamil Nadu reported 50 new cases of the novel Coronavirus on Monday, 48 of which were related to the mid-March Tablighi Jamaat conference in Delhi, Tamil Nadu Health Secretary, Beela Rajesh said.

The State also witnessed one death on Monday, taking the total number of deaths to six and the total tally in the state to 621 Covid-19 positive cases.

"A 57 year old female passed away today morning," Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Beela Rajesh said while addressing the media on Monday. "She was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital last night with acute respiratory infection. Her Covid-19 test results have come positive."


The Health Secretary appealed to people not to communalise the pandemic and urged people to be kind. She added that the state was taking every effort to ensure that the State did not enter Stage 3 of the pandemic.

The Tamil Nadu CM, Edappadi K. Palaniswami, said 1 lakh rapid testing kits were ordered and that as soon as the kits arrived, rapid testing would begin in the State which has recorded the second highest number of Covid-19 cases in the county.

Chennai leads among districts with 110 cases, followed by Coimbatore with 59 cases of Covid-19. Out of the 50 cases reported on Monday, 15 were from Chennai.

As many as 1,500 people from the state had attended the congregation in Delhi, leading to a scramble to trace, test and isolate them.

A total of 1427 people who attended the Delhi conference have been traced and isolated. Of these, 574 attendees have tested positive.

The government shared data on Sunday that said 72,791 people were under home quarantine, 205 people were in government quarantine facilities, 1,766 people were under hospital isolation.

The Health Department said 5015 samples have been tested, of these 621 have been positive and 295 samples are pending. Eight people have been discharged so far.
