Tamil Nadu records highest ever number of Covid-19 cases with 771 people testing positive

This spike in cases comes as the State recorded two days where the numbers were over 500.

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu saw an unprecedented rise in the number of cases on Wednesday with the State reporting 771 Covid-19 cases, taking the total tally to 4829 cases. Two more deaths were reported on Wednesday taking the death toll in the State to 35.

This spike in cases comes as the State recorded two days where the numbers were over 500.

Chennai accounted for 324 of the 771 cases and touched a whopping 2328 cases. The second highest number of cases on Wednesday were reported from Ariyalur (188), followed by Cuddalore (95).


A large number of these cases have been linked to the Koyambedu wholesale market in Chennai which was open during the total lockdown.

On Tuesday, Tamil Nadu deputy CM O Panneerselvam requested people from other districts who are connected to Koyambedu market to come forward and get tested for Coronavirus.

So far, 254 children below the age of 12 have also tested positive in the state.

The government said 31 patients were discharged on Wednesday, taking the total number of recoveries to 1,516.

So far, 1,88,241 samples and 1,78,472 people have been tested. As many as 13,413 samples were tested on Wednesday alone, the highest so far.
