Tamil Nadu Govt not to acquire lands for SEZs

With a view to avoid incidents like Nandigram, the Tamil Nadu Government on Wednesday announced it will not acquire lands for the companies establishing Special Economic Zones in the state.

CHENNAI: With a view to avoid incidents like Nandigram, the Tamil Nadu Government on Wednesday announced it will not acquire lands for the companies establishing Special Economic Zones in the state.
"After seeing the West Bengal episode, the State has decided not to acquire lands for the firms setting up a SEZ and a condition has been clearly laid out that the issue (of land acquisition) must be sorted out between the company and the land-owners," Electricity Minister Arcot N Veerasamy told the state Assembly.
He made the announcement while intervening during a mention by AIADMK member K S Vijayakumar on the issue of setting up SEZ in Gummidipoondi, near here. The Minister also said industrialists from the state would be given preference while permitting the establishment of SEZs.
