CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Government today said it will approach the Indian Embassy in Bahrain to bring back the body of a fisherman, allegedly shot dead by pirates recently.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in a statement said she had instructed Fisheries Department Secretary S Vijayakumar to approach the Indian Embassy in Bahrain to make arrangements to bring back the body of 47-year-old S Thomas, who hails from Kaniyakumari district.

Referring to the May 21 incident, she said Thomas was allegedly shot dead by pirates while fishing along the coast of Bahrain with seven other Indian fishermen.

She expressed her condolences to the bereaved family and issued orders to release Rs five lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the family, according to the statement.
