CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today directed to increase the quantum of water released from Mettur Dam so that the farmers can joyfully celebrate ' Aadiperukku' festival on August 3.

'Aadiperukku' is an occasion where farmers offer worship to Cauvery for good agricultural prospects by strewing flowers on the river.

Jayalalithaa said she had received requests from various quarters for enhancing water release from Mettur dam for this purpose.

"Factoring in the present storage level and the inflow, I have directed increasing the water release from 2000 cusecs to 4000 cusecs from July 27 to August 3 for the people to joyfully celebrate Aadiperukku," she said in a statement here.
