CHENNAI: Hours after getting a resolution passed in the Assembly today on the Sri Lankan issue, seeking an international probe into allegations of war crimes in that country, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate action over it.

Earlier today, the assembly adopted a resolution urging the Centre to move a "strong resolution" at the UNHRC for an international probe on alleged human rights violations and war crimes in Sri Lanka.

Referring to it, Jayalalithaa in a letter to Modi said "in the face of overwhelming public opinion in Tamil Nadu, the Assembly debated the matter at length and passed a resolution."

She told him that the resolution strongly urged the Centre to take necessary action to pass a resolution in the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Seeking a resolution in the UNHRC is "to have an international inquiry into instances of war crimes and violations of the Geneva Conventions in the closing stages of the civil war in Sri Lanka in 2009," she said.

Attaching the text of the resolution, she said "I request the Government of India to take immediate necessary further action on the basis of the resolution."
