CHENNAI: The number of coronavirus cases in Tamil Nadu reached 19,372 on Thursday with 827 people testing positive for the infection, the media bulletin confirmed. This happens to be the highest single-day spike in the State.

Tamil Nadu also reported the highest ever jump in deaths in the State with 12 fatalities being recorded on Thursday. This takes the death toll in the State to 145.

The state has been reporting a new high over the last few days. On Wednesday, 817 people tested positive for the virus.


Chennai alone accounted for 559 of these 827 new patients. The State capital has witnessed 12,762 cases in all.

Among the fresh cases on Thursday, 94 people had travelled from other states - 74 from Maharashtra and 20 from Karnataka.

However, 639 people were discharged on Thursday, taking the total number of recoveries to 10,548.
