Taking a leaf out of Karnataka, Congress to stake claim to form government in Manipur

In last year's Assembly polls, Congress has secured 28 seats while BJP has got 21 seats in Manipur. Now congress is reduced to 20 MLAs.

GUWAHATI: Seeking to do a Karnataka in Manipur, former state CM O Ibobi Singh today said that Congress will stake claim to form a government in the state as it is the single largest party.

In last year's Assembly polls, Congress has secured 28 seats while BJP has got 21 seats in Manipur. Now congress is reduced to 20 MLAs.

Ibobi Singh said, “If BJP is given chance in Karnataka by virtue of being the single largest party, Congress in Manipur must also get the chance to form the government.”


Former minister Gaikhangam said, "BJP forming government in Karnataka is nothing but double standard. We had soon after the declaration of election results stake claim to form a government, however, we were not invited by the governor.”

CP Joshi, AICC General Secretary in charge of Northeast India, told ET, “Individual state units of Manipur and Meghalaya have to decide if they want to stake claim. However in both the states, Congress is the single largest party.”
