Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel sparked a controversy after urging people of Rewa to support Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Modi sahab ka dhyan rakhana (take care of Modi sir),” the former Gujarat CM is heard saying in a viral video.

The Congress demanded her resignation. “She is in a Constitutional post and should not have made such statement. If she wants to work like a BJP worker, she should resign and contest the Lok Sabha elections,” said state Congress media in-charge Shobha Oza.

Patel visited the Rewa solar power plant — once the biggest in the world — on Saturday during a two-day tour of Vindhya region. While interacting with a group of villagers, who asked for jobs for local youths, the governor said: “Modi sahab ka dhyan rakhana.”

In the video, villagers can be heard urging Patel to provide jobs to youths at the solar plant. She asks officials to make a list. However, just before leaving, the governor turned to the villagers and said: “In future, you will get more opportunities like this, but for that, you must take care of Prime Minister Modi.” BJP leaders Rajendra Shukla and K P Tripathi were with her at the time.

This is not the first time that Patel landed in a controversy. In April last year, Patel was heard advising BJP workers in Satna how to get votes. “If you want to get votes you should visit homes of children, put your hand on their heads. Only then will you get votes,” she was heard telling party workers.

Shobha Oza alleged that on earlier occasions too, the Governor has tried to favour BJP.

“During her address to Madhya Pradesh assembly, she did not read the point about farm loan waiver and read a BJP slogan that was not part of the written speech. The Governor should immediately resign,” she said.
