While generally all crimes are against the state, there are some criminal activities that are directed against the existence of the state itself: treason, sedition, and rebellion. Sedition refers generally to the offence related to conduct or speech inciting people to rebel against the authority of a state or government. The National Crime Records Bureau started collecting data on ‘offences against the state’* only since 2014.

SOME HIGH-PROFILE SEDITION CASES...

Hardik Patel: Last month Gujarat crime branch filed chargesheet against patidar quota stir leader Hardik Patel and his five associates and accused them of sedition.

Aseem Trivedi: Kanpur-based artist was charged with sedition for ‘offensive’ cartoons. He was accused of putting up banners mocking the Constitution during a rally of anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare in Mumbai.

Binayak Sen*: Was accused of sedition by Chhattisgarh govt for allegedly supporting Naxalites.

Arundhati Roy*: Roy, Hurriyat leader Syed Geelani and others booked on charges of sedition by Delhi Police for their “anti-India” speech at a seminar in 2010.

Praveen Togadia*:Rajasthan govt slapped sedition charges on Hindu leader in 2003

*Simranjit Singh Mann: The Shiromani Akali Dal-Amritsar president was charged with four different cases of sedition.

*Akbaruddin Owaisi: Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi was slapped with the charge of sedition by the district police of Karimnagar, for the purported hate speech he delivered at Nirmal on December 22, 2013.
