The Bengal assembly on Tuesday suspended Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari from the House for the remaining part of the winter session for remarks against Speaker Biman Banerjee. This is the second time Adhikari has been suspended from the House. Trinamool Congress member Tapas Ray moved the resolution for the suspension, which was passed by the House.

The incident happened during a debate on 'how the Constitution was under threat'. Participating in the debate, BJP MLA Sankar Ghosh raised the issue of BJP defectors. The Speaker expunged his remarks, following which Adhikari and other BJP MLAs raised slogans against the Speaker in the well of the House. Adhikari alleged that the Speaker was 'against the Constitution'. BJP MLAs later submitted a notice for no-trust motion against the Speaker.

"When the Speaker said he will expunge certain portions from Ghosh's speech, I told him that he cannot do so. He reiterated his decision to expunge the portion. Then I told him that he was against the Constitution. I told him, twice, 'you don't obey the Constitution.' From 2011, horse trading of MLAs was done but no action was taken despite violation of 10th Schedule of the Constitution," Adhikari told ET.
