'Suspicious items' probed on US plane from Japan

US security and airline officials were investigating "suspicious items" found on board a plane carrying 155 passengers from Japan on Tuesday, but there were no explosives involved, the FBI said.

LOS ANGELES:US security and airline officials were investigating "suspicious items" found on board a plane carrying 155 passengers from Japan on Tuesday, but there were no explosives involved, the FBI said.

The Delta Airlines flight arrived from Tokyo at 8:00 am at Portland International Airport in the western US state of Oregon, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a statement.

" US Customs and Border Protection, the FBI, the Transportation Security Administration, the Port of Portland and Delta Airlines are investigating an incident involving suspicious items found" on the flight, it said.

"The items are not explosive."

The FBI added that there were 155 passengers and 10 crew members on board.

US Customs officers "are processing the passengers and baggage through security. FBI Agents are interviewing passengers and crew members, and they are processing the plane for possible evidence.

"No further information is available at this time," it added.

The incident comes amid heightened security in the United States and elsewhere after the discovery of explosive devices on planes in Britain and Dubai originating from Yemen.
