Suspended MPs unable to attend House panel meets

Suspended opposition members are unable to attend the parliamentary standing committee meetings, even days after both houses of parliament adjourned sine die as the session has not been prorogued, an opposition member said.

However, sources in the parliamentary affairs ministry said there is no delay in prorogation. It will be done as per the process.

They also added that in a day or two both houses can be prorogued.


In the winter session of parliament, a total of 146 MPs of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were suspended till the end of the session.

"MPs were suspended till the end of the session, now they are not able to attend the parliamentary committee meetings even after both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die on December 21 as the session has not been prorogued," Samajwadi Party MP Javed Ali said.

Ali said several MPs are not able to become part of the standing committee visits as their suspension has been prolonged due to the delay in prorogation of both houses of parliament.

Talking about prorogation, former Secretary General of Lok Sabha PDT Achary said the prorogation is the official end of the session. And now in this case suspension of MPs will continue till the session is not prolonged.

Prorogation is an official term for shutting down Parliament. During this period, no sittings of either House can be held.

The President can prorogue both houses of parliament and it is done on the advice of the executive.

The session begins with a summons issued by the President and ends when the President issues a prorogation of it.
