Survey to evaluate ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ progress

NEW DELHI: In a bid to boost its flagship 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' programme, the government may soon carry out a survey to evaluate the progress of the scheme.

The scheme, which aims to address skewed gender ratio at the district level as well as create an environment for empowerment of young girls through education, was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his previous term on January 22, 2015 at Panipat, Haryana.

ET has learnt that the Women and Child Development (WCD) ministry, headed by Smriti Irani, is looking at ways to strengthen the implementation of the scheme. As part of this initiative, it is planning to launch the survey, to be conducted by an independent agency in collaboration with the government's policy think tank, Niti Aayog.


People in the know said the ministry, which is in charge of overseeing the implementation of the scheme down to the district level, will formulate the guidelines for the survey.

The ministry is already in the process of hiring an agency for similar survey of another flagship programme of the NDA government — the PM Matru Vandana Yojana — a maternity benefits scheme which aims to provide partial compensation for wage loss to women during their pregnancy and cash incentive of Rs 6,000 to mothers on the birth of their first child.
