Supreme Court to hear plea on ban of diesel-run vehicles tomorrow

Supreme court will hear a plea on Tuesday by automobile manufacturers seeking modification of its order prohibiting the sale and registration of diesel vehicles.

NEW DELHI: Automakers Mercedes Benz, Toyota, Mahindra & Mahindra and General Motors on January 4 moved the Supreme Court against the ban on fresh registration of diesel vehicles in the National Capital Region.

Their plea will be heard the next day by a bench headed by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur.

The carmakers argued that their models were environment friendly as they adhered to emission norms.
Toyota cited its hybrid models such as the Prius, priced at about Rs 40 lakh, as a case in point while M&M spoke about its electric model Reva. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal spoke for Toyota, Abhishek Singhvi for M&M and Arvind Datar for Mercedes Benz and GM.
