New Delhi: The Supreme Court has sought a status report on the ongoing mediation in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute case by July 18 and said that if the matter is not resolved amicably it may start daily hearings from July 25.

In a short order passed on Thursday, a five-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi said “we deem it proper to request Justice FM Ibrahim Kalifulla to inform this court the progress of mediation till date and the stage at which the said process is presently at”.

Justice Kalifulla is the head of the three-member mediation panel, which includes spiritual guru Sri Ravi Shankar and senior advocate Sriram Panchu.

“We also make it clear that if this court comes to a conclusion that, having regard to the report of Justice FM Ibrahim Kalifulla, the mediation proceedings should be ordered to be concluded, the court will do so and order for commencement of the hearing of the appeals before it, tentatively, on and from 25th July, 2019, which hearings, if required, will be conducted on day-to-day basis,” the court said.

The Allahabad High Court had in 2010 carved up the 0.67 acres of land, on which the now-demolished Babri Masjid structure once stood, between the warring Hindus and Muslims in the ratio of 2:1. Both sides appealed against the ruling and the matter has been pending with the court.
