Supreme Court clarifies it did not approve new Form 6 during Bihar SIR

The Supreme Court on Monday said it had not adjudicated upon the new Form 6 while hearing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana made the observation after counsel appearing for a petitioner submitted that the Election Commission had claimed the revised Form 6 was approved by the apex court.

"There is no adjudication on the new Form 6," Justice Bagchi observed, adding that the issue concerning the new form was not before the court when it heard the Bihar SIR matter.

Form 6 is an application used by eligible individuals seeking inclusion of their names in the electoral rolls.

The observation comes after the Supreme Court, while hearing a separate petition on October 5, said it had not approved any modifications to Form 6 being used by the Election Commission during the SIR exercise in various states.

The Election Commission had issued a press release on September 26 suggesting that the apex court had upheld the Form 6 declaration in its May 2026 judgment concerning the Bihar SIR.
