Supreme Court rejects plea filed by Sanjiv Bhatt’s wife
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed a plea by the wife of jailed Gujarat-cadre IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt for relief from custody and the right to move the courts for bail. The court instead said Bhatt can move the appropriate court for relief.

Bhatt was arrested in connection with an old case for allegedly planting drugs in a judge’s house to force the tenant to vacate.

His wife Shweta had moved the top court alleging that he was not being allowed to move the court for bail. The state, through senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi, contested this. Instead the state insisted that he was in touch with his lawyers. Rohatgi said he had already moved the high court to withdraw the plea for relief. “How can he move that court again?” he said.

The CJI then dismissed the plea without any observations. Bhatt, who was once close to the powers that be in the state, fell out with the dispensation after the 2002 riots.
