Supreme Court refuses to stay Bhullar hanging

Death row convict Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar’s wife Navneet Kaur failed to get any relief from the Supreme Court on Tuesday on his execution pending a hearing on her review plea.

NEW DELHI: Death row convict Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar’s wife Navneet Kaur failed to get any relief from the Supreme Court on Tuesday on his execution pending a hearing on her review plea.

Senior counsel Ram Jethmalani mentioned the case on an out-ofturn basis seeking a court order to stay his impending execution. “Arrangements are being made to hang Bhullar like Ajmal Kasab and Afzal Guru,” he told a three-judge bench, headed by CJI Altamas Kabir.

Jethmalani is the amicus curiae in the case. “We don’t want to hear from the newspapers that he has been hanged. The recent hangings have brought us so much infamy,” Jethmalani contended. Justice Kabir wondered whether such issues could be re-agitated again, but said that appropriate orders would be passed in the case.
