Chennai: Former BJP leader and advocate L Victoria Gowri (2nd R) with other judges
The Supreme Court on Friday passed a short order giving reasons for dismissing a plea filed by some lawyers challenging the appointment of Justice Victoria L Gowri to the Madras High Court.

A division bench of justices Sanjiv Khanna and B R Gavai said it has gone through constitution bench judgments and held that it cannot go into the suitability of a candidate who has been recommended for judgeship but can only decide whether the candidate meets the eligibility criteria prescribed under the Constitution. Earlier this week, the Supreme Court had dismissed two petitions filed by some lawyers of Madras High Court and observed that it cannot presume that the SC collegium was unaware of Gowri's political background or her controversial statements.
