The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to grant any interim relief to BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh minister Kunwar Vijay Shah, booked for his comments calling Colonel Sofiya Qureshi a "sister of terrorists".

An FIR was registered against Shah after the Madhya Pradesh High Court on Wednesday took suo motu cognizance of his objectionable comments and ordered registration of an FIR against him.

Aggrieved, he moved SC seeking a stay on the FIR. A bench, headed by Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, refused intervention in the matter and hauled up Shah for his comments.

"What kind of statements are you making? He is holding a constitutional office... He has to exercise a degree of restraint... Every sentence uttered by a minister has to be with responsibility," the CJI verbally told the counsel for Shah.

When Shah's counsel insisted on a stay of the FIR, the CJI orally remarked that the court will not entertain the plea "just because somebody is a minister". His counsel apprised the bench that Shah has already tendered an apology. The counsel added that his statement has been widely misunderstood and overhyped by the media by taking it out of context. The bench told his counsel to approach the high court. The bench will resume hearing on Friday.
