Supreme Court defers Ayodhya verdict

The Supreme Court on Thursday deferred by a week the pronouncement of the Ayodhya verdict by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday deferred by a week the pronouncement of the Ayodhya verdict by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court.

The court also issued notice to all the parties to the title suit and asked the attorney general to be present in the court when the case is heard September 28.

Ramesh Chandra Tripathi, a retired bureaucrat, had filed a petition in the Supreme Court asking it to postpone the ruling on an ownership fight over a religious site in the northern town of Ayodhya.

"The Supreme Court has deferred the Ayodhya verdict. The order states that the high court in Allahabad cannot pass the judgement tomorrow," said an official in the registrar office the Supreme Court.
