Supreme Court asks Delhi Police to wrap up probe into Samsung FIR

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked Delhi police to “preferably” wrap up within six weeks its probe into Samsung’s FIR alleging fraud in connection with the summons order issued against its chairman Lee Kun Hee in a cheating case worth $ 1.4 million.

Delhi police lawyer PK Dey sought eight to nine months to complete the probe and an order to the home ministry to hasten the process of issuing letters rogatory to UAE to ascertain documents on the basis of which the Delhi-based proprietary firm JCE Consultancy filed the case against the Samsung Electronics chief.

“The probe is underway. It will take some time,” Dey said. However, a bench, comprising Justices Shiva Kirti Singh and Amitava Roy, refused to grant that much time to the police to finish their probe at the insistence of Samsung counsel Gopal Subramanium who wanted the probe to be completed as soon as possible.

JCE had filed a cheating case against chairman on the basis of a bill of exchange and demanded recovery of $1.4 million.

A Ghaziabad court subsequently issued non-bailable warrants against him on March 16, 2005.

After the Allahabad HC refused to stay the summons, Lee Kun Hee moved the top court and got a stay of the summons on March 31, 2014, for six weeks. But the issue sparked off panic among foreign investors. Samsung then filed an FIR in Delhi alleging that the case was based on a fraud.
