Supporters, well-wishers greet Karunakaran on 90th birthday

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress veteran K Karunakaran was today greeted by his supporters and well-wishers on his 90th birthday today.
Kerala PCC president Ramesh Chennithala, Congress functionaries and workers from all parts of the state and people from different walks of life called on the stalwart at his residence here.
Karunakaran had last week celebrated his 'pirunnal', the birthday according to Malayalam calendar by worshipping at the famous Guruvayoor Sree Krishna temple.
As per the Gregorian calendar, the seniormost Congress leader of the country, Kannoth Karunakaran was born on July 5, 1918 at Chirakkal near Kannur.
At a very young age he plunged into politics as a freedom fighter dropping out of school. He later shifted his area of activity to Thrissur in central Kerala, where he displayed skills as an able organiser and played a vital role in building Congress's trade union wing INTUC.
Karunakaran came to the centre stage of the state politics in 1967, when he was chosen to lead the nine-member Congress in the state assembly.
A four-time Chief Minister, Karunakaran's career since then has been marked by ups and downs and dominated by controversies.His first stint as Chief Minister in 1977 lasted just a month as he had to quit under adverse High Court remarks in connection with the 'Rajan case.' He, however, bounced back to the hot seat for another brief spell in 1981 and had a full term from 1982 to 1987.
His last tenure as Chief Minister was cut short in 1995 at the height of the faction feud. He broke with the Congress three years ago but returned to the parent party last year.
