Sunday ET: Mamata Banerjee says won't pay Centre interest on loan

Mamata said the state has been requesting the Centre to give a three-year moratorium on the loan, but so far nothing has happened.

KOLKATA: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday her government will not pay interest on a Rs 2.3-crore loan availed by the previous Left Front regime, throwing up another challenge for the Congress-led central government with whom she shares a fractious relationship.

Addressing a huge gathering from a makeshift pulpit in the heart of the city, Mamata said the state has been requesting the Centre to give a three-year moratorium on the loan, but so far nothing has happened.

“We will wait for some more time, but if it the moratorium is still not given, we will go to Delhi with all our MPs and MLAs, all 212 of them, to meet the PM”.
