Senior Congress leader Sukhjinder Randhawa is to become the next chief minister of Punjab, as per media reports on Sunday. A formal announcement of the same is expected soon.

"All MLAs have named Sukhjinder Randhawa chief minister before Congress high command," Congress MLA Pritam Kotbhai told reporters in Chandigarh. The decision comes a day after the resignation of Captain Amarinder Singh just months ahead of state elections.

62-year-old Randhawa was a member of the outgoing Cabinet headed by Singh, handling the ministries of jails and cooperation. The three-time MLA hails from from the Gurdaspur district in the Majha region.

The Congress leader has voiced his opinions against Amarinder Singh in the recent clash between the ex-CM and Navjot Singh Sidhu.

In 2017, Randhawa was re-elected as MLA from Dera Baba Nanak assembly constituency.

Earlier this year, he joined hands with Sidhu, and had targeted his own government over alleged failure to fulfil the promises made in the run-up to the 2017 polls.
