Sujata Rout Karthikeyan enters BJD as Naveen Patnaik quells leadership speculation
Sujata Rout Karthikeyan, wife of VK Pandian, has formally joined the BJD, sparking leadership speculation. While Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik affirmed he will lead the party in upcoming elections, sources suggest Karthikeyan could become the BJD'...

Welcoming her at Sankha Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, Patnaik described Sujata as "a simple member" of BJD and praised her work in women's empowerment. "She has been an IAS officer and held several important positions... I am sure she will learn to lead people, particularly women," he said.
As questions over the party's leadership resurfaced, Patnaik sought to end the speculation: "I will lead BJD in the next elections. I want to make it very clear:"
Senior BJD sources told ET that Sujata is expected to assume a much larger political role and could emerge as the party's No. 2 leader.
As per sources, her Odia identity, OBC Khandayat background and stewardship of Mission Shakti have given her a strong connection with women across Odisha. Unlike Pandian, whose Tamil identity became a flashpoint during the 2024 assembly and Lok Sabha polls, Sujata is an Odia from Kendrapara and belongs to the OBC Khandayat social grouping, from which Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan also hails.
Her political debut comes months after Pandian, who withdrew from active politics following BJD's 2024 defeat, was appointed lifetime president of Biju Naveen Inspirational Foundation, the charitable trust floated by Patnaik.
Senior BJD leaders told ET that while Pandian is expected to continue behind the scenes, Sujata will occupy the party's political space and emerge as one of its most visible public faces alongside Patnaik.
