Suicide attack at Peshawar stadium, 1 killed

A suicide bomber blew himself up at packed stadium in Pak, 2 killed.

PESHAWAR: A suicide bomber blew himself up at a packed sports stadium in northwestern Peshawar city on Tuesday, killing one person and wounding five others, police said.

Nobody immediately claimed the responsibility but several other attacks in past months have been blamed on al-Qaida linked pro-Taliban militants.

The bombing took place at the closing ceremony of a sports event attended by senior government officials, police official Nisar Khan said.

"One man has been killed and five others are injured," senior police official Aziz Khan said.

"There was a suicide blast just at the gate of the stadium," added another police official, Pervez Khan. He said that more casualties were feared. "Provincial Governor Owais Ghani had left the stadium moments ago," he added.

The blast also damaged six vehicles parked outside the stadium, he added. Peshawar is the capital of North West Frontier Province which borders Afghanistan.
