BENGALURU: Author and former chairperson of Infosys Foundation Sudha Murty said on Friday that the news of her nomination to the Rajya Sabha came as a big surprise and that it "is a huge responsibility".

Speaking to ET over the phone from Thailand, Murty said: "The Prime Minister called me last night and broke the news. This is a huge responsibility. I am grateful to the PM for this opportunity to serve my country and the people. I will do my level best to live up to their expectations."

Murty, 73, is in Thailand at the invitation of Kannada Sangha at the Asian Institute of Technology to deliver a speech.

On March 8, International Women's Day, PM Modi posted on microblogging website X that the President of India nominated Murty to the upper house of Parliament. The President can nominate 12 members to the Rajya Sabha for their contribution to art, literature, science and social service.
