Success of parliamentary control depends on vigilance of MPs: PJ Kurien

UNITED NATIONS: Success of parliamentary oversight depends on the vigilance of the lawmakers, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman PJ Kurien has said.

Kurien attended a discussion on 'Parliamentary Oversight - Challenges and Opportunities' here yesterday focusing on to what extent Parliament exercises its oversight powers in practice and how could Government responsiveness be increased In his intervention, the Deputy Chairman elaborated on the number of devices available with Indian Parliament to ensure accountability of the government.

In this context the Deputy Chairman mentioned the Public Accounts Committee, Joint Parliamentary Committee, subject related committees and the Committee on Government Assurances.

He stressed that while there are several mechanisms with the Parliament, the success of parliamentary oversight depends on the vigilance of the parliamentarians and how effectively they use them.
