Students in Kerala to have health card, free textbook

In a move to ensure the physical and mental health of students, Kerala government will provide them with health cards and free textbooks from the next academic year.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a move to ensure the physical and mental health of students, Kerala government will provide them with health cards and free textbooks from the next academic year.

At a special press meet on the second anniversary of the LDF Government, education minister M A Baby said the scheme envisaged a programme having the entire student community checked by doctors, based on which the health cards would be issued.

"We are keen to ensure the quality of education as well the health of the students," Baby, also a senior CPI-M leader, said.

From the coming academic year, students of all classes and castes upto the eighth standard would be given textbooks. This concession was now available to girls and students from the SC-ST sections, he said.

The Health Card scheme was also meant to put across the message that "proper health care is a fundamental right of every child," he said.

It would help detect if any student was suffering from serious physical or mental maladies, so that they could be treated before the problem got acute.
