Strong quake jolts Solomon Islands

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale Tuesday jolted the South Pacific nation of Solomon Islands

WELLINGTON: An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale Tuesday jolted the South Pacific nation of Solomon Islands, the US Geological Survey said. The quake occurred at 9.40 am (New Zealand time).

There were no reports of damage or causality so far, it said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii did not issue an alert for the region.

In April last year, an earthquake measuring 8.0 on the Richter scale jolted the western Solomons which triggered a tsunami, killing at least 50 people and displaced thousands in the aftermath.
