Strike disrupts work at Yule plant in Nadia

Work was disrupted on Thursday at Phoenix Yule Ltd's Nadia plant in West Bengal, as workers affiliated to trade union CITU observed a 24-hr strike.

WEST BENGAL : Work was disrupted on Thursday at Phoenix Yule Ltd's Nadia plant as workers affiliated to trade union CITU observed a 24-hr strike here.
The strike was called against alleged non-fulfilment of financial benefits promised to 300 permanent workers of the plant as reached in a 1999 contract between the union and the management, after the German Yule Group acquired majority stake in the company.
The management was exerting extra burden on the workforce and forcing the employees to opt for Voluntary Retirement Scheme, the union alleged.
A company spokesman, however, denied the charges maintaining the wage structure of the employees and work environment at the plant, was one of the best in the country.
Phoenix Yule is a conveyor belts manufacturer in which a Group holds 74 per cent stake.
