Sting tape not be made public before probe

The Speaker is unlikely to accept the BJP-CPM demand for making public contents of the sting operation on the alleged ‘cash-for-votes’ scam.

NEW DELHI: The Speaker is unlikely to accept the BJP-CPM demand for making public contents of the sting operation on the alleged cash-for-votes scam. Sources said since the tape is an important evidence on the entire episode, it will be first handed over to the Lok Sabha privileges committee, which is expected to probe the issue.

Since the TV news channel, which handed over the tape to the Speakers office itself maintained that it was not sure about the authenticity of the contents and hence decided not to telecast it, the probe will also try to verify the tapes credentials. However, the tape could also be handed over to cops in the event of a parallel criminal investigation into the case.

The three BJP MPs have now decided against lodging formal complaints at a police station.
