Former home minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday said that he suspected the role of a government agency in the alleged snooping bid on some Opposition members. Several leaders of Opposition parties had on Tuesday shared Apple threat alerts that they had received on their phones.

“It is undeniable that hundreds of Opposition leaders got an alert from Apple of a state-sponsored attempt to compromise their phones. Why only Opposition leaders? Who will be interested in compromising the phones of Opposition leaders? After the Pegasus mystery (not resolved until this date), the finger of suspicion points to a government agency. At the moment, it is only a suspicion,” Chidambaram posted on social media.

Compared to vociferous protests by Opposition leaders on Tuesday, the Opposition camps on Wednesday appeared comparatively non-persistent on the issue. Neither the All India Congress Committee held any official briefing to further take up the matter nor major Opposition leaders raised the matter during their campaign speeches in election-bound states.

So far there has been no joint statement from the INDIA bloc. It remains to be seen how Opposition parties will deal with the issue in the days to come
