State seeks transfer of select riot cases
The Maharashtra government would soon come up with a plea before the Bombay High Court to refer select cases of 1992-93 riots in Mumbai to a special court.
The state Cabinet, at its meeting on Wednesday, approved several other measures to expedite the process to settle major riot cases and bring the guilty to book. Chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh last week had announced that trial for select riot cases would be handled by a special court.
A high-level committee will be formed under additional chief secretary (home) to review the cases pending before various courts and find out reasons for the delay. The panel, which would comprise principal secretary and legal counsellor, law and judiciary department, assistant commissioner of police concerned, and the public prosecutor, will then draw up a list of the pending cases. These would be put up before the Bombay High Court with a request of reference to the special court, which would have its sitting daily for an early settlement.
Similarly, the committee has been asked to follow up the legal proceedings twice a month. It would also report twice a month to the chief minister and deputy chief minister RR Patil, who holds the home portfolio, and make recommendations on rioting incidents that have not been registered as court cases by the police.
