State of BJP-RLD tie-up to be clear in council polls

Results of biennial elections to the Uttar Pradesh legislative council, scheduled to be held on Thursday, are likely to prove to be a test-case for the finalisation of a electoral tie-up between the BJP and RLD in the state.

NEW DELHI: Results of biennial elections to the Uttar Pradesh legislative council, scheduled to be held on Thursday, are likely to prove to be a test-case for the finalisation of a electoral tie-up between the BJP and RLD in the state.

Elections to 13 legislative council seats caused by the superannuation of 10 members, elevation of former chief minister Kalyan Singhs close associate Kusum Rai to the Rajya Sabha and the death of Samajwadi Partys state unit chief Ram Sharan Das will be held on January 22.

The BJP, which has a strength of 51 in the state assembly, has fielded former minister Baburam Mcom and the partys kisan morcha chief Vinod Pandey for the council poll. While it can easily win one seat, it will need the help of RLDs 10 MLAs to see its second nominee through.

The BJP and RLD have been engaged in alliance talks for the past few months. The fate of the saffron partys second candidate in the legislative council polls will determine whether the talks are headed in the right direction. The BJP central leaderships insistence on going ahead with the proposed alliance was one of the factors behind former chief minister Kalyan Singhs rebellion.
