A PIL has been filed by BJP connection with the Municipal polls, demanding polls in all the civic bodies which are pending for long.

The State Election Commission (SEC) will not notify civic body polls for Howrah and Kolkata Municipal bodies and has informed Calcutta High Court that it will wait for HC's decision on the issue.

A PIL has been filed by BJP connection with the Municipal polls, demanding polls in all the civic bodies which are pending for long. The HC has asked the state government to file an affidavit clarifying why all the civic body polls will not be conducted together.

During the hearing of the Division bench led by Chief Justice Prakash Srivastav and Rajarshi Bhardwaj, the advocate fighting on behalf of the SEC informed the Court that they will not notify the date of the Municipal polls till the court hearing is on.

The judges also sought the reasons behind not conducting all the bypolls together and told the state government to file an affidavit on the issue.

West Bengal’s State Election Commission had sought the state government’s permission after October 20 to conduct pending elections for urban civic bodies in December, sources said. The local body election of 112 urban civic bodies including two Municipal Corporations of Kolkata and Howrah, are due in Bengal. A notification might be issued after the 30 October assembly by-polls. The civic body polls for Kolkata and Howrah was slated to happen on December 19, though the dates were announced.
