The logjam in both houses of Parliament continued on Monday during the Budget session.

The Lok Sabha on Monday adjourned without transacting any serious business due to protests and sloganeering by the Opposition members demanding a JPC probe into the Adani issue and with the BJP MPs too engaging in verbal exchanges with the latter. The House will meet on Wednesday.

The Chair adjourned the House till 2 pm soon after the protest started at 11 am. The same happened again when the House resumed in the afternoon. Earlier, in the middle of protests, the Speaker read out obituary references of sitting BJP member from Pune Girish Bapat and former independent MP Innocent from Chalakudy, who died last week.

In the Rajya Sabha, MPs from the Congress and other opposition parties created a ruckus, demanding a JPC probe into the charges against the Adani Group. As house chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar called for the laying of the listed official papers on the table of the house, the opposition members started shouting slogans. The house was adjourned till 2 pm.

It resumed in the afternoon and the chairman greeted the members on Rajya Sabha Day. He urged the members to participate in the discussion instead of engaging in disruptions. Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman then moved the Competition (Amendment) Bill, 2023 for consideration and passage. The bill was put to voice vote while opposition members continued slogan shouting. The bill was passed, and the house was adjourned to meet on Wednesday.

The bill, which was passed on March 29 by the S, provides for the Competition Commission of India to impose penalties on entities based on their global turnover instead of the considering only relevant market turnover.
