MUMBAI: The alleged vandalisation of a BR Ambedkar statue in faraway Kanpur, triggered protests across Maharashtra, which is yet to recover from the Dalit killings in Vidarbha.
The Chembur area in eastern Mumbai, which has a sizeable Dalit population, witnessed unruly scenes and stone-pelting by angry protesters on Wednesday. A mob of around 40 people gathered at Ramabai Ambedkar square in Chembur to protest the alleged desecration at around 1 pm on Wednesday.
The police, however, rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Some unruly scenes were also witnessed in the evening after which an SRP team was deployed to help the police.
Protests were also reported from Nasik and Pune. Window-panes of six Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) buses were smashed at Nasik Road in Devlaligaon.
In Kanpur soon after the desecration became public, angry locals damaged vehicles and held up the traffic. Passers-by had noticed the damaged statue in Ambedkar Nagar area in the morning and a crowd soon gathered there demanding immediate arrest of those responsible, the police said.
The Kakadeo Station house officer said a new life-size statue of Ambedkar would be installed in place of the broken one and a search was on for those who might have damaged it.
