SRINAGAR: Vehicular traffic on the 300-km long Srinagar-Jammu national highway was suspended on Wednesday due to heavy snowfall around Jawahar Tunnel.

The traffic on the highway, the only road linking Kashmir with rest of the country, was suspended as a precautionary measure in view of heavy snowfall in the area around Jawahar Tunnel; the gateway to Kashmir valley, official sources said.

Accumulation of snow in certain stretches around Jawahar Tunnel has made the road slippery, they said, adding vehicular movement was stopped as a precautionary measure.

However, the vehicles which had left for Jammu in the morning were allowed to move and likewise the road is being cleared for the Srinagar-bound vehicles, they said.

Besides Srinagar, reports of snowfall were also received from all the districts of the valley including famous hill resorts of Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Yousmarg.

Several inches of fresh snow accumulated on the ground in the upper reaches of the valley where snowfall ranging between five to 15 feet was recorded during the past week.
