COLOMBO: For the first time, Sri Lanka today introduced transparent ballot boxes imported from India in select polling centres instead of the traditional wooden ones to ensure free and fair polls.

The ballot boxes were imported from India and they are being used as a pilot project, the country's Election Commission said.

The transparent ballot boxes are placed at select polling centres in the Northern Province at the Provincial Council election being held today, the poll panel said.

The ballot boxes were delivered to the polling centres yesterday under heavy police protection, Colombo Page reported.
