E Sreedharan (88), the former chief of Delhi Metro, will formally join the BJP at the Kerala Vijay Yatra of the party in Kerala on Thursday. State BJP president K Surendran will admit him into the party.

Union minister of state for road transport VK Singh is expected to take part in the event. The retired railway services engineer, who now lives at Ponnani in Malappuram district, said he was joining the party to contribute for the infrastructure and industrial development of Kerala, which he feels, have taken a backseat under the successive regimes of the UDF and LDF.

While the BJP Kerala unit invited him to join the party -- an offer he readily accepted -- the party is yet to take a view on fielding him in the assembly elections due in summer.

Sreedharan himself told ET that he was keen to contest polls, and it was up to the party to decide where he should contest from. Surendran, the state president, recently tweeted that Sreedharan joining BJP was an endorsement of the development agenda of PM Narendra Modi.
