COLOMBO: Sri Lankan government has told newspapers and other related bodies to be cautious while accepting advertisements from fraudulent finance companies, which syphon off funds of common people, to keep them under close scrutiny.

The speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament W J M Lokubandara cautioned the media bodies to be alert while providing publicity space for finance companies that may operate to defraud the people of their precious earnings.

The issue came up for discussion in the wake of a popular English tuition master known as Sakvithi Ranasinghe allegedly fleeing the country after swindling nearly SLR 1000 million of unsuspecting people through a bogus finance institution.

"The media should be wary of carrying advertisements of such bogus institutions and they should verify the status of such institutions from the Central bank," the Speaker said during a discussion on the issue in Parliament.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Finance and State Revenue Minister Ranjith Sivambalapitya told the house that the government will enact new laws to bring to book culprits running such fraudulent institutions as the existing laws were inadequate to raid and take action against such spurious companies operating within the country.

Sivambalapitya noted that through the media, the Central Bank has published the names of registered finance companies from time to time to alert the public of the fly by night operators.
