An assurance in this regard had been given by Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram to senior Congress leader Oommen Chandy. An official announcement on this would be made on October 12 this year, the day when Pope Benedict XVI would make the official declaration on canonization of Sr Alphosa, Chandy said in a press release here.

Sister Alphona was born in Kudamaloor near Kottayam on August 19, 1910 as the fourth child in a family of straitened means. A person who suffered various physical ailments since childhood, she opted for a religious life and took her perpetual vow in 1936.

Her tomb at Bharananganam, near the convent where she spent her religious life, is visited by large number of devotees.

According to Syro Malabar Church (SMC), she was declared Blessed by the late Pope John Paul II in 1986 and last year the present Pope signed the decree approving the miracle that took place through her intercession, paving the way for her canonization. Vaitcan announced the final decision to confer sainthood in May this year.
