NEW DELHI: Amid high security, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unfurled the Tricolour and delivered his first Independence Day speech on Friday. Thousands of armed personnel kept vigil while about 200 CCTVs were installed in the vicinity of Red Fort, where the national flag was hoisted, to monitor the minutest of moves. Some 500 cameras were installed on all the routes leading to the 17th- century fort. About 5,000 officials from Delhi Police, including those from the special cell and security wing, were pressed into service while traffic police streamlined movement of vehicles.

For the first time on I-Day, two high-resolution cameras, costing Rs 2.5 crore each, were mounted on the two burjs (towers) of the Mughal-era monument to keep track of any suspicious activity within a 4km radius. "Delhi Police hired the two cameras, the only ones in the country, at Rs 50,000 per day from their Mumbai counterparts. We can even zoom in on a housefly within 4km," said a senior police officer.

The cameras, which were put up on Thursday, are said to be more powerful than those used by television broadcasters. The live feed was monitored closely at the Delhi Police control room. A central control room set up at Red Fort was manned by senior officials.

A National Security Guards official watched the recordings so that he can instruct the snipers at highrises.

Sharpshooters of NSG and spotters were deployed on the nearby highrises. Specialized units, including Quick Reaction Teams, SWAT, and bomb and dog squads, were deployed along with the commando units of Delhi Police at strategic locations.

While helicopters patrolled the skies, an air defence mechanism safeguarded the precincts of the venue. Security was heightened along the route taken by the prime minister's cavalcade and around Rajghat, where he laid a wreath at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi early morning early morning. To prevent any security breach, vehicles on the nearby routes were let in only after parking stickers were shown. Additional manpower from CISF and Delhi Police was deployed at important public facilities like Delhi Metro and IGI airport, as well as crowded areas like markets, railway stations and inter-state bus terminals.
