SP-BSP slugfest getting worse by the day

After Mayawati charged the UPA with launching a witch-hunt against her at the prodding of the SP, the latter hit back, accusing her of using the state police to settle scores with her political opponents.

NEW DELHI: The BSP-Samajwadi Party feud looks set to intensify in the coming days. A day after Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati charged the Manmohan Singh government with launching a witch-hunt against her at the prodding of the Samajwadi Party, the latter hit back, accusing her of using the state police to settle scores with her political opponents.

The SP also refuted the UP chief ministers allegation that it was coercing the UPA government on having a CBI director of its choice. Let her prove that I have anything to do with the post of CBI director, SP general secretary Amar Singh told newspersons in Mumbai on Sunday.

Ms Mayawati was, in fact, trying to nail him through a sting operation which was carried out on Mr K K Dwivedi, who is in-charge of the investigation of a case against him, the SP leader alleged.

Hitting back at the BSP supremo, Mr Singh pointed out that as per a Supreme Court judgement, the post of CBI director was decided by the prime minister and the leader of the opposition. So there is no question of my interference, he said.

The SP general secretary charged Ms Mayawati with indulging in vindictive politics against his party colleagues, and had arrested several workers without any reason.

The sloppy investigation carried out by the UP Police in the Aarushi murder case has also came in handy to the SP leadership to train its guns on the Mayawati government. Mr Singh singled out ADG Brijlal for special criticism.

The charges of character assassination levelled on 14-year-old Aarushi and her family members were disturbing, the SP general secretary said.

Referring to retired Supreme Court judge H K Semas appointment as the chairman of UP Human Rights Commission, Mr Singh alleged that this was done in lieu on the favours showered by him on the state chief minister during his stint in the apex court. He favoured Ms Mayawati in three court cases and was, in return, awarded with the new job, he alleged, adding that Justice Sema was also offered a bungalow at Noida.

The SP leader also sought to know the reasons behind the suspension of Mr Dhirendra Rai, the investigating officer in Ms Mayawatis case. Rai was on deputation to the CBI. But after he investigated the Mayawati case, he was called back to the UP Police. He was subsequently suspended on false charges, Mr Singh alleged.
