Soz's Amarnath suggestion is an assault on Hinduism: BJP
The BJP condemned Saifuddin Soz's suggestion of slashing the period of Amarnath yatra from two months to one and limiting the annual number of pilgrims to 75,000.
Soz had earlier said in a statement that the Congress is in favour of implementing recommendations of the Nitish Sengupta Committee on Amarnath yatra to facilitate the same.
Terming his suggestion as a direct interference in the religious affairs of Hindus, state BJP president Ashok Khajuria said Sengupta's recommendations "have not been implemented by the government or Shri Amarnath Shrine Board" since their submission in 1997.
"The suggestion by Soz is a deliberate assault on Hinduism, an act designed to accord greater respectability to Kashmir-based religious extremists and separatists," Khajuria said.
The BJP warned Soz and Jammu-based Congress leaders not to "vitiate the atmosphere in the province by poking their nose in the religious affairs of Hindus."
